I was wondering what differentiates 'chick lit' from world class literature. Read 'Lessons in Forgetting' for an example of the former and any novel written by the likes of Amitav Ghosh, Nadeem Aslam, Daniyal Mueenuddin, Kamila Shamsie, or Mohd. Hanif for an example of the latter. Chicklit is just a story about a group of people. World class fiction is a story about a group of people - that is also a social commentary, a view of a particular time period through the lives of people living during that time period, an insightful analysis of the characters and how they play off of one another, an exploration of human emotions, a bouquet of irony, humor, melancholy, regret, joy, ambition, pain.....all interwoven within the tapestry of a great tale about a group of people. Regrettably, Anita Nair's book is just chick lit. At the very end of the book, she brings in the issue of female infanticide. It seems totally disjointed from the rest of the story and almost an afterthought --- as if she decide to imbue a greater meaning to the tale she had written but somewhat too little and too late. It is not a bad read. But don't expect anything more from it.
